Frequently Asked Questions
Learn about our adoption screening, foster family policies, and animal welfare standards.
How does the pet adoption process work?
Browse our listings to find an available pet or exotic bird. Click "Contact Foster Owner" on the pet's profile. Once your home safety verification step is completed, you receive the direct phone number, address, and application form to schedule a meet-and-greet with the foster caregiver.
Why are adoption fees $0 or waived for most animals?
AdoptPet.org is an ethical community rescue network. Our mission is to keep companion animals out of kill-shelters and prevent abandonment. Foster owners surrender pets due to relocations, allergies, or landlord changes, choosing loving families over commercial profit.
Why is a safety verification required to contact foster homes?
To comply with the Anti-Puppy Mill and Animal Protection Protocol, we require a quick verification before releasing a foster family's direct personal phone number and home address. This safeguards volunteer families from commercial brokers, pet-flippers, and automated scalpers.
Are the pets vaccinated and health-checked?
Yes. All registered foster dogs and cats undergo veterinary intake checks, core vaccinations, and deworming. Exotic parrots receive avian veterinary evaluations and DNA sexing certificates before being approved for rehoming.
Can I adopt an animal if I live in another city or state?
Yes. Many foster caregivers are open to out-of-state adopters provided you can arrange ground transportation or travel to meet the pet in person. Flight shipping is restricted to maintain animal comfort and safety.
What should I prepare before bringing my pet home?
We recommend preparing food, a secure crate or cage, bedding, water bowls, and proof of pet-friendly housing if renting. Foster parents will provide the pet's current medical records and medical dietary notes upon transfer.
