Steps to welcome your furry family member.

Our ethical, foster-based adoption process is designed around making the right match for both pets and families.

How it works.

Adopting from our verified network is a simple four-step process built to protect rescue animals and ensure every pet enters a safe, permanent, and loving home.

Step 01

Online Adoption Application

Browse our available rescue pets and submit an initial adoption inquiry. To safeguard our rescue animals against illegal pet-flipping and commercial breeders, applicants complete a brief 30-second identity verification before accessing direct foster parent contact details.

Submitting an application is completely free and places you in priority review for that animal.

Step 02

Foster Review & Meet-and-Greet

Once verified, your application is reviewed by the designated foster home. Because all our rescue pets live in real volunteer households rather than crowded kennels, foster parents can share exact insights into the pet's temperament, house manners, and energy level.

You will coordinate a virtual or in-person meet-and-greet at the foster home or a local dog-friendly park to ensure you and the pet are a natural match.

Step 03

Adoption Agreement & Health Coverage

When both you and the foster caregiver agree it is the perfect match, you sign the standard non-profit adoption agreement. For standard rescue adoptions, any listed fee goes directly to cover complete veterinary care. For sponsored $0 rehoming animals, the adoption fee is fully waived.

Adoption Care Always Includes:

  • Complete professional veterinary health examination
  • Spay or neuter surgery completed
  • Age-appropriate core vaccinations (Distemper, Rabies, Bordetella)
  • Heartworm test (dogs) and FIV/FeLV test (cats)
  • Comprehensive deworming treatment
  • Lifetime registered microchip implant
Step 04

Welcome Home!

Congratulations! You welcome your new family member home. Foster parents provide full medical records, vaccination certificates, and a transition food supply.

We encourage all adopters to follow the standard 3-3-3 decompression rule: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, and 3 months to feel fully settled in their forever home.

Common questions.

How long does the adoption process take?
Most adoptions are finalized within 24 to 48 hours once your identity verification and meet-and-greet are scheduled with the foster parent.
Why is identity verification required before contacting fosters?
Our foster parents open their private homes to rescue animals. To protect volunteers against unauthorized visits, pet flipping, and fraudulent inquiries, applicants complete a brief verification step before private foster contact details are released.
What is included with sponsored $0 fee adoptions?
Sponsored pets have their adoption fees covered by our non-profit network donors. They receive the exact same comprehensive veterinary care, full vaccinations, spay/neuter, and microchip registration at zero cost to the approved adopter.
Do you have a physical shelter building I can visit?
No. AdoptPet is a 100% foster-based rescue network. All dogs, cats, and birds live with loving foster families in residential homes. This ensures animals are socialized and comfortable in a family environment before being adopted.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for rescue pets?
The 3-3-3 rule represents the stages of rescue adjustment: 3 days to overcome initial anxiety and decompress, 3 weeks to learn household boundaries and routines, and 3 months to build complete trust and feel fully at home.
